The IRS reported that more than 116,000 California residents have yet to claim their tax refunds from 2021.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) warned that more than 116,000 people in California have an unclaimed refund from the 2021 tax year, which, if not requested, will be transferred to the Department of the Treasury.

The total amount amounts to $922 million, with an average of $600 per taxpayer. The deadline to claim the money for the 2021 tax year is April 15, 2025. After that date, IRS taxpayers lose their right to receive it. Additionally, those who qualified for the Earned Income Tax Credit could also lose this additional benefit.

Requirements for Collecting an IRS Refund

The IRS notes that even if a taxpayer files their 2021 tax return by the deadline, their refund may be withheld if they have not yet filed their 2022 and 2023 taxes.

The federal agency also reminds taxpayers that if they have outstanding debts with the IRS, state agencies, child support, or federal loans, the refund will be applied to those obligations first, and they will only receive the remaining money.

The agency recommends that taxpayers gather all necessary documentation before filing their return.
